PENTASA® is a mesalazine or 5-ASA product used for the treatment and long-term management of inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease).

PENTASA is prescribed to relieve mild to moderate symptoms of active disease and as maintenance therapy to help prevent recurrent attacks or flare-ups. As well, recent findings suggest that patients who continue to take their medication as recommended by their doctor may reduce the risk of serious long-term complications of inflammatory bowel disease. In Canada, PENTASA is available in 500 mg and 1 g extended-release tablets and also in suppositories and enemas for rectal administration. PENTASA tablets are composed of extended-release microgranules to help ensure that the drug is released throughout the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The suppositories and enemas allow the drug to treat the inflammation by staying in contact with the inflamed areas for several hours.

PENTASA tablets and suppositories/enemas can be used alone or in combination.

Some endoscopy, surgery and x-ray procedures require the patient's bowel to be cleaned in advance.

PICO-SALAX® is a powerful, dual-action laxative used to cleanse the bowel so the patient is prepared for the procedure.

PICO-SALAX contains two different laxatives that provide its dual actions. The first laxative draws water into the bowel to soften stools so they can be “washed out” easily. The second laxative stimulates the muscles of the bowel so they alternately contract and relax to move the stools out quickly. PICO-SALAX has been available worldwide for more than 30 years and it is the Number 1 selling bowel preparation in Canada.

PICO-SALAX is a powder that you mix with water and drink. It comes in natural orange and cranberry flavours and is available without a prescription from your pharmacy.
